Types Of Training
There are 2 routes to licence issue, Integrated and Modular.
The modular route involves doing the training in subordinate chunks. Many training establishments do not offer all of the modules, so trainees may need to use several schools. Whilst there are time limits and constraints on the order the units are completed in, there is no need to undertake them continuously. Academic requirements may be satisfied by distance learning.
Integrated training involves a single continuous course with one organisation. Usually more than one base is used. Typically basic flying is done abroad in a country with more reliable weather, with the advanced phases conducted in the country of origin. Nevertheless, the training is still continuously overseen as one course. Regulatory oversight involves greater costs and hence fees, but allows the course to be conducted more rapidly and with a more reliable quality of graduate.
There are strengths and weaknesses for each of these routes, depending on the circumstances of the individual trainee.
For example, the modular route tends to appeal to those with an existing career, as they can continue to work whilst training. The modules can be spread over several years if needed for financial or leave reasons. It is also very appealing to those with previous experience, for example ex military pilots, who will be exempt from some of the modules.
Integrated training is more expensive, and therefore may appear to represent a heavier financial burden. However for those able to commit to it, there are two powerful advantages:
1. Historically, integrated course graduates have been viewed as exhibiting a more consistent quality. This has often translated into holding the inside track when job hunting. Indeed, airline sponsorships were generally integrated courses.
2. Although the basic price of integrated training is higher, this needs to be looked at in the context of an entire budget to reach paid employment. Not only are you more employable, but you also enter the job market sooner because integrated training is quicker. There is an extra synergy as a quicker course also reduces your cost of living over the total time span of your training.
You should be sure to budget fully when comparing the costs of the two routes. The Jet Pilot Programme is an integrated course.
