Q. How long is the programme? Where is the training conducted?
A. The Jet Pilot Programme takes 14 months to complete. Approximately 12 months of this is spent in South Africa. The remaining time is spent completing ME/IR, MCC and ATPL ground school exams in Galway and Dublin, Ireland.
Q. Will I be a fully qualified commercial pilot at the end of this programme?
A. Once you have completed the Jet Pilot Programme you will obtain a Frozen JAR-FCL ATPL, as well as MCC, ME & IR qualifications. Then you can choose to complete a type rating with an airline or through self sponsorship, where you will be qualified on a certain type of aircraft as a commercial pilot. Q. What interviews or assessments does Sigmar Aviation Training conduct?
A. We will conduct assessments for all successful applicants which will involve an interview & RADAR assessment. The RADAR selection system is computer based and tests your natural aptitude towards flight training. Interview & assessments is €150 which reimbursed to Jet Pilot Programme students. Q. Am I required to take a Class 1 Medical, before I start this course?
A. Irish Aviation regulation requires students to obtain an Irish JAR – Class 1 Aeromedical, to be issued a JAR-FCL through this programme. Therefore it is highly recommended that before applying you complete a JAR - Class 1 Aeromedical. These can only be conducted at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin.

Q. Is there a minimum / maximum age limit?
A. You must a minimum of 17 years old to obtain a Private Pilots Licence (PPL), and 18 years old to obtain a Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL). We have no maximum age limit for application to the Jet Pilot Programme.
Q. Are there any educational prerequisites for application of the programme?
A. The minimum educational requirements for application are Leaving Certificate, GCSE’s or equivalent. Preferably including Maths, Science & Physics although this isn’t mandatory for application.
Q. What is the cost of a type rating with an airline?
A. Depending on which airline and the aircraft type will affect the cost. Generally an industry standard would have you bonded to the airline for the cost of the type rating for 3 years. Q. Do I need a ‘Student Visa’ to work in South Africa?
A. Once successful through the assessment process and you decide to partake in the programme you will require a temporary residence study permit for South Africa.
If you are a resident of Ireland we can facilitate this for you, an application and full list of requirements will be given once a deposit for your place is received. A police certificate is required to apply. All other requirements are generic, like passports, birth certificate, Class 1 medical etc.

Q. Is accommodation and meals included in the cost of the programme?
A. Yes, while training in Port Alfred accommodation and meals are included.
During the Instrument Rating course in Galway your accommodation is also included. However whilst in Dublin for revision, exams and MCC accommodation is not included.

Q. Am I compensated for any hours I have already flown?
A. If you have completed your PPL, you can be credited flying hours. This would allow you to accrue additional hours at the end of programme. How many hours exactly will be assessed on a case by case basis.

A. PA 28 – Cherokee & Arrow
PA 34 Seneca
FNPT 2 – Based on PA 34
Instrument rating: BN2 – Islander
MCC training: B737-200 or Arvo RJ
Q. Will there be skills tests conducted during the course?
A. In accordance with the provisions of JAR-FCL there will be Licence Skills Tests (LST’s) required for the CPL, the M/E Class Rating and the M/E Instrument Rating. In addition to these skills tests the course is designed as an integrated programme of ‘Air Education’ and therefore will be a process of continuous assessment of your progress. For the flying syllabus this will be recorded both by detailed written debriefs of each flying detail and also in a formal process of proficiency checks carried out by a duly authorised school Examiner. These assessment flights, 17 in all, may be conducted or observed by an Authorised Examiner of the Irish Aviation Authority in order to ‘sample’ or audit the programmes training standards.
Q. Why is the training conducted in South Africa?
A. The weather is far more suitable then anywhere in the UK or Ireland. Port Alfred allows for the perfect amount of all weather conditions, essential for your flight training. The landscape and surrounding areas are quite amazing, adding to the quality of your training experience. The instructors involved in the programme are all fully JAR compliant highly experienced instructors. The school itself is disciplined in its operations and dedicated to all students on and off campus. The students come from a range of cultural backgrounds, which is beneficial and relevant to the worldwide aviation industry.
Q. Will I need any vaccinations before traveling to South Africa?
A. Port Alfred, where you’ll be living for the entirety of training in South Africa is safe and free from malaria. If however you are considering taking a trip to a national park at any time when in Africa it is recommended you consult see your doctor or a travel doctor. Q. How is the payment of the course structured?
A. There is an initial deposit of €3,000 to hold a place in the course. The initial installment of €34,395 is due two weeks before the students depart to South Africa. Then 3 payments of €19,000 every 3 months makes up a total of €95,000 including the reimbursement for the cost of Class 1 - Aeromedical.
